New Theatre for the 21st Century!
So many things have changed at the start of this millennium, and the recent
arrival of Covid has served to accelerate that change in Theatre. Our
alternative approach to this new Theatre is to go back to basics, to
stripped-back theatre, to collaborative performances
coming out workshops.
Just as in our Alternative Shakespeare process, we seek in the first
instance to better understand what makes for good Theatre, and
then re-apply that learning in totally fresh circumstances.
To date we have created and performed new plays drawing on Greek myths, Americana, Workshop performances with script in hand, performed stage
audio pieces, English Mystery Plays, and community plays.
Just as importantly we have re-examined many aspects of how plays are created.
As well as Community Theatres, we have performed in Fringe Festivals,
Churches, bookshops, pubs, and institutes. A number of our plays
have been devised and researched by the company themselves,
focusing on themes and issues of the community.
The only thing we haven't found new alternatives for is the funding of this work. Despite many
applications to statutory and charity funders, the sad fact is that to date we have only
been awarded one small grant - the independent charity Barry Jackson Trust.
Otherwise all our funding has been self-generated.
